Instagram’s new Map feature lets users share their real-time location. U.S. Senators are calling for Instagram to shut it down entirely, warning: “Allowing the geolocation of minors on your platform is just the latest example of this sad reality.”
While Instagram says the Map feature is “off by default,” teens can easily switch it back on. Privacy experts warn that “sharing this information can be fun, but experts warn it’s also a gift to stalkers.” Calli Schroeder, senior counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, advises: “Absolutely make the choice to have it off.”
Experts point out that location data can reveal sensitive information: “If someone sees that you’re going to drop off and pick up at certain times, they now know where your kid goes to school or day care — that’s a security thing you should be thinking about.”

Relationship and parenting experts warn that “location sharing can also turn into a stressful or even dangerous form of control.” They note this represents “a big privacy shift for Instagram. It’s going from an intentional sharing experience where you decide when and what to post to an always-on, background” system.
Research shows concerns about “safety” as well as the “Fear of missing out (FOMO) or social exclusion” among users, with “girls were most likely to say that location-sharing (45%)” was a concern.
